A Sad Farewell to Katie
January 25, 2010

This past Wednesday, we had to say goodbye to the sweet, beautiful Katie, constant companion to Jake. She was diagnosed with bone cancer just 1 1/2 weeks ago but it was fast-growing and to keep her alive any longer would have been selfish. She was the perfect dog and brought Bruce and Chris so much joy. We are thankful for all the time we had to share with this soulful dog, and we extend our deepest sympathy to Bruce, Chris, and Jake. The dog park collective is heart-broken and will miss her terribly.

Dog Park Renovations to Deal with Erosion and Safety Issues.
December 22, 2009

At the request of the BPC, Essex County has undertaken a study of the runoff, erosion and safety issues afflicting the Brookdale Dog Park. The County recently shared with us their remediation plans to take place this winter.

The issues to be addressed
The sloped surface in the large dog enclosure is allowing rainfall to wash the rock dust surface material out of the enclosure and down onto pathways to the south. This leaves dangerous erosion conditions within the enclosure and a dangerous and unattractive spill of rock dust throughout the area south of the Dog Park.

The plan (in our words)
To level the large dog enclosure area by moving in the southern most fencing where the slope is steepest and pushing out the fencing on the east / north side to include a more level area. The new area
is to measure in size that which has been lost to the south. Surface material in the former enclosure area will be relocated to new area with additional surfacing and fill to be brought in as needed. The area that is no longer within the enclosure will be seeded for grass. Benches and dog-play apparatuses will be relocated as needed. Care will be taken to ensure the best possible growing conditions for mature trees inside and around the Dog Park area.

While the BPC leadership supports this plan as a reasonable and cost-effective way to solve the existing Dog Park issues, we want to hear from anyone in the general membership that does NOT. Please include specific reasons why you do not support the corrective measures and, if possible, a comparable alternative solution as soon as possible. Email your response to: info@brookdaleparkconservancy.org.

We will collect your feedback and if deemed necessary, we would like to present an alternative recommendation to the County by Tuesday, Dec. 29th. Thank you.
